PM’s Austerity Push Leads States to Cut Convoys, Adopt Hybrid Work Model

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity and fuel conservation has begun reflecting across several state governments, with multiple Chief Ministers initiating measures to reduce official expenditure and fuel consumption.
Chief Ministers from states including Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, and Odisha have reportedly reduced the size of their official convoys by nearly 50 percent in response to the Prime Minister’s call for efficient resource management.
In addition to scaling down convoys, these state governments have also introduced two-day hybrid work-from-home cycles for sections of government employees. The move is aimed at lowering fuel usage, easing traffic congestion, and promoting administrative efficiency without disrupting governance.
Officials stated that the measures are part of a broader effort to encourage responsible public spending and energy conservation. Several departments have also been advised to minimize non-essential travel and adopt greater use of digital meetings and virtual coordination.
The austerity initiatives are being viewed as a coordinated administrative response to the Centre’s push for sustainable governance practices and disciplined public expenditure management.
