Sameera Reddy Calls 8-Hour Shift a ‘Luxury’ Amid Debate Triggered by Deepika Padukone

Actor Sameera Reddy has joined the ongoing conversation around regulated working hours in the film industry, describing the idea of an eight-hour work shift as a “luxury” for many women in India. Her comments come in the wake of a debate sparked by Deepika Padukone, who has reportedly advocated for shorter working hours, particularly after embracing motherhood.

In a recent interaction, Reddy highlighted the gap between ideal workplace practices and the ground realities faced by most working women. While acknowledging the importance of work-life balance, she stressed that many women in India do not have the privilege to demand fixed or reduced working hours, especially in demanding industries like cinema.

She pointed out that film production is often governed by tight schedules, financial constraints, and logistical challenges, which make it difficult to enforce strict work-hour limits. According to her, producers and crews must frequently adapt to unpredictable shooting conditions, leaving little room for rigid time structures. Despite this, she recognised the need for better support systems for women, particularly mothers, who juggle professional responsibilities with childcare.

Reddy maintained a balanced stance, refraining from criticising Padukone’s perspective while emphasising that such flexibility is not accessible to everyone. She described the ability to request an eight-hour shift as a matter of privilege, rather than a standard practice in India’s workforce.

The debate gained traction after reports about Padukone’s preference for structured working hours surfaced, prompting discussions within the entertainment industry. Opinions have remained divided, with some supporting the push for healthier work environments and others citing the practical challenges of implementing such changes in filmmaking.
