Supreme Court Pulls Up NTA Over NEET-UG Paper Leak Case

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 25th May 2026

The Supreme Court on Monday sharply criticised the National Testing Agency (NTA) while hearing petitions related to the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case, expressing concern over repeated lapses in the conduct of national-level examinations. During the hearing, the apex court observed that authorities appeared to have “not learnt lessons” from earlier controversies involving examination irregularities. The bench remarked that it was unfortunate that despite previous incidents and judicial scrutiny, similar problems continued to affect major competitive exams conducted across the country.

The court was hearing a batch of petitions seeking reforms in the examination system and stronger safeguards to prevent paper leaks and malpractice. Petitioners argued that repeated incidents had damaged the credibility of the examination process and created uncertainty among lakhs of students preparing for highly competitive entrance tests.

The Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the NTA, asking them to respond to concerns raised in the petitions. The court also directed the NTA to submit details regarding the steps taken to improve examination security and prevent future leaks. In addition, the monitoring committee overseeing the matter was asked to ensure compliance with earlier directions issued by the court.

The controversy surrounding NEET-UG 2026 began after allegations surfaced that the question paper had been leaked before the examination. The claims eventually led to the cancellation of the test, affecting over 22 lakh medical aspirants across India. The issue sparked nationwide protests and demands for accountability from students, parents, and educational organisations.

Investigations conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have uncovered an alleged network linked to the leak, involving middlemen, educational officials, and other accused persons. Several arrests have already been made in connection with the case, including individuals accused of sharing question papers in exchange for money.

The case has reignited debate over the transparency and reliability of India’s examination system. Education experts and student groups have called for major reforms in the functioning of the NTA, along with the introduction of stricter technological and administrative safeguards to ensure fairness in future examinations. The Supreme Court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming weeks as investigations progress further.
