500 NCC Cadets Pay Solemn Tribute to Bengal’s Own Kargil Hero, Captain Kanad Bhattacharya

Kolkata | 25 July -On the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, nearly 500 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets under the aegis of the West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate and Kolkata C Group came together to honour Captain Kanad Bhattacharya, SM (Posthumous)—Bengal’s own hero from Kolkata and the city’s first Army officer to make the supreme sacrifice during Operation Vijay in the Kargil War.
In a moving expression of gratitude and national pride, the young cadets reaffirmed that the legacy of Bengal’s brave son continues to inspire generations to serve the nation with courage, honour, and selfless devotion.
The tribute commenced with a silent march from Kendriya Vidyalaya Vijay Durg to the James Prinsep Memorial, where hundreds of cadets participated in a solemn candlelight vigil. The illuminated memorial stood as a powerful reminder that while heroes may fall in battle, their ideals endure in the hearts of a grateful nation.
The commemorative programme featured stirring patriotic recitations by poets from across Kolkata, paying homage to the extraordinary courage of Captain Kanad Bhattacharya and the countless soldiers who defended India’s sovereignty during the Kargil conflict. The evening culminated in a heartfelt rendition of “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon,” sung in unison by all present, transforming the banks of the Hooghly into a resonant tribute to sacrifice, remembrance, and patriotism.
Captain Kanad Bhattacharya remains a symbol of unwavering courage and duty. As Bengal’s own hero from Kolkata, his supreme sacrifice transcends geography, reminding every Indian that freedom has been secured through the courage of those who placed the nation above themselves.
As the nation commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas, the tribute by the NCC cadets served as more than a memorial – it was a solemn pledge by India’s youth to uphold the values for which Captain Kanad Bhattacharya and his comrades fought. The celebrations will culminate on July 26, when Rajnath Singh will lead the nation in paying homage to the 545 bravehearts—including 537 Army personnel, five Indian Air Force personnel, one BSF jawan and two civilians—who laid down their lives to secure India’s victory in the Kargil War and safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity.
