Cyclone Murasu: Kolkata, South Bengal Likely to Receive Rain After Andhra Pradesh Landfall
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th November 2026

Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers following the landfall of Cyclone Murasu along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather system is expected to influence conditions across parts of West Bengal over the next two days.
The cyclone crossed the coast between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, between 3.30 am and 5.30 am on November 3. It brought strong winds reaching 100–110 kmph, with gusts of up to 120 kmph, as it moved inland.
The IMD weather forecast indicates that Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia could receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers until 8.30 am on Wednesday. The rainfall is expected to result from the circulation and changing atmospheric conditions associated with the cyclone.
Meteorologists expect the system to gradually lose strength as it moves further inland. Cyclone Murasu is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday afternoon and subsequently deteriorate into a deep depression by midnight. Its weakening is expected to reduce the intensity of its impact on weather conditions in eastern India.
Despite the possibility of rainfall over the next two days, the weather department has forecast predominantly dry conditions across South Bengal between November 4 and November 9. However, another spell of rain could affect Kolkata and some neighbouring districts on November 9 and 10.
In North Bengal, isolated rainfall is possible in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, while most other districts are expected to experience dry weather. The forecast suggests that the impact of the cyclone will remain relatively limited in the northern parts of the state. The IMD has not issued any specific weather warning for West Bengal in connection with Cyclone Murasu. Nevertheless, residents in the districts likely to receive rainfall have been advised to remain attentive to changing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued an advisory for fishermen, asking them not to venture into parts of the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, as well as along the south Odisha coast, until Tuesday. The warning comes amid rough sea conditions associated with the cyclone’s movement.
