Former India captain Anil Kumble has raised concerns over Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership following Kolkata Knight Riders’ disappointing defeat to Gujarat Titans in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. The loss has intensified scrutiny on KKR’s tactics, with experts questioning the team’s decision-making under pressure.
KKR went down by five wickets in a match where they struggled to defend a below-par total. While the bowlers showed flashes of promise, the overall execution lacked consistency, allowing Gujarat Titans to comfortably chase down the target. The defeat extended KKR’s winless run in the tournament, putting them in a difficult position early in the season.
Kumble pointed out that Rahane’s handling of the bowling attack was a key concern. He noted that KKR failed to utilise their frontline spin options effectively during critical phases, particularly in the powerplay when early breakthroughs could have shifted momentum. This allowed Gujarat’s top order to settle quickly and dictate terms from the outset.
According to Kumble, successful T20 captaincy requires proactive thinking and timely decision-making, especially when defending modest totals. He suggested that Rahane appeared overly cautious and did not make the necessary adjustments as the game progressed. The delayed use of key bowlers and lack of aggressive field placements were cited as factors that contributed to KKR losing control of the match.
The former leg-spinner also highlighted the importance of game awareness in high-pressure situations, adding that KKR missed crucial opportunities to build pressure on the opposition. He stressed that small tactical decisions often determine outcomes in T20 cricket, and KKR failed to capitalise on those moments. With multiple losses already impacting their campaign, KKR now face mounting pressure to regroup and deliver results. Rahane, an experienced international cricketer, will be expected to address these concerns and lead a turnaround in the team’s fortunes.
