News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 17th June 2026

Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to accepting its citizens residing illegally in India, assuring New Delhi that all verified Bangladeshi nationals will be repatriated promptly once their identities are officially confirmed through the established verification process.

The assurance comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between the two neighbouring countries on the issue of undocumented migration, which has remained a sensitive aspect of bilateral relations for several years. Bangladeshi authorities emphasised that while they are prepared to receive their nationals, repatriation must be based on proper documentation and nationality verification to avoid wrongful identification.

According to reports, Indian authorities have submitted details of numerous individuals suspected of being Bangladeshi citizens for confirmation by Dhaka. Bangladesh has maintained that each case must undergo scrutiny in accordance with mutually agreed procedures before any individual is accepted for return. Officials stressed that the country has consistently cooperated with India on such matters and would continue to do so in the future.

The development is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts by both nations to streamline the repatriation mechanism and address concerns related to illegal immigration in a structured and lawful manner. Border management and migration have often featured prominently in discussions between the two governments, particularly in states along India’s eastern frontier.

Despite occasional differences over migration-related issues, India and Bangladesh have sustained close ties across a range of sectors, including trade, security cooperation, connectivity and cultural exchanges. Both countries have repeatedly underlined the importance of dialogue and coordination in resolving matters of mutual concern.

Bangladesh’s latest assurance is being viewed as a positive step towards improving cooperation on a complex issue that affects both nations. Officials from both sides are expected to continue discussions aimed at expediting the verification process and ensuring that repatriation procedures are carried out efficiently, transparently and in accordance with legal norms.
