Chand Mera Dil Dance Sequence Sparks Debate Over Bharatanatyam Fusion Portrayal

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 26th May 2026

A dance sequence featuring actor Ananya Panday in the recently released film Chand Mera Dil has sparked a major debate online, with social media users divided over its portrayal of Bharatanatyam through a modern fusion format. The performance, which combines elements of the classical Indian dance form with contemporary choreography and pop-style movements, has drawn criticism from several viewers and cultural commentators who believe the sequence failed to respect the discipline and authenticity associated with Bharatanatyam.

Clips from the film quickly circulated across platforms such as X and Instagram, where many users compared the performance to iconic classical dance portrayals by actors like Sridevi and Sai Pallavi. Critics argued that the choreography lacked the precision, expressions, and technical depth traditionally associated with Bharatanatyam. Some also raised objections to the visual use of a Lord Nataraja idol in the background, calling it culturally insensitive.

The controversy intensified after Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed publicly criticised the sequence, stating that classical dance traditions should not be trivialised in commercial cinema. However, several users defended the film, saying the performance was intended as a fusion piece rather than a traditional recital.

A behind-the-scenes clip released later shifted some attention towards the film’s creative team, with viewers debating whether the criticism should be directed at the actor, choreographer, or director. Directed by Vivek Soni, the film has continued to generate discussion online since its release.
