Election Duty Officers in West Bengal Move Supreme Court Over Deletion From Voter List

In a significant development ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, a group of 65 election duty officers has approached the Supreme Court of India after discovering that their names were missing from the state’s electoral rolls. The मामला has raised fresh concerns about the accuracy and implementation of the ongoing voter list revision process.
The petitioners, all assigned official responsibilities for conducting the elections, argued that their exclusion from the voter list is both arbitrary and contradictory. Despite being entrusted with ensuring a free and fair electoral process, they now face the possibility of being unable to cast their own votes. According to their submissions, they possess valid voter identification and have fulfilled all required formalities, yet their names were omitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise carried out under the supervision of the Election Commission of India.
During the hearing, the apex court declined to intervene directly in the electoral process at this stage. The bench observed that courts typically avoid interfering in election-related matters once the process is underway, citing established legal principles. However, the court provided an alternative remedy by directing the petitioners to approach designated appellate authorities responsible for handling disputes arising from the SIR process. It also instructed that such cases be given priority consideration, especially given the urgency created by the ongoing election schedule.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by the officers, the court indicated that they might not be able to vote in the current election due to time constraints. Nonetheless, it clarified that their right to be included in the electoral rolls could still be restored through the appropriate legal channels if their claims are found valid.
The controversy comes in the wake of a large-scale revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal. The SIR exercise has reportedly led to the deletion of a substantial number of names, running into millions. Authorities have defended the exercise, stating that it aims to eliminate duplicate, shifted, or otherwise ineligible entries in order to ensure a cleaner and more accurate voter database. However, critics have raised concerns about possible procedural lapses and the risk of genuine voters being inadvertently removed.
The exclusion of election duty officers has intensified scrutiny of the revision process, as it highlights potential inconsistencies in verification mechanisms. Observers point out that if officials directly involved in managing elections can be removed from the rolls, it raises broader questions about the reliability of the updated lists.
