A French national has been arrested and charged in the United States following allegations of sexually assaulting a fellow passenger during an international flight, in an incident that has sparked renewed concerns over in-flight safety and passenger security.
The accused, identified as 48-year-old Guillaume Sebastien Roger Mattler, was travelling on a flight from Zurich to Miami when the alleged incident occurred in the first-class cabin. According to authorities, the victim, a 29-year-old woman seated next to him, was asleep at the time of the assault.
Details from a federal complaint reveal that two co-passengers witnessed the accused engaging in inappropriate behaviour. One of them reportedly recorded the incident on a mobile phone, while another alerted the cabin crew. The footage and eyewitness accounts indicated that the accused was making suspicious hand movements in the direction of the woman, raising immediate concern.
Flight attendants intervened promptly after being informed and allegedly found the man touching the woman inappropriately over her clothing. The crew then took swift action, relocating him from the first-class section to the economy cabin to prevent any further contact with the victim. The woman was later woken up and informed of what had transpired, after which she was said to be visibly shaken and distressed.
In a troubling detail, the accused is also reported to have attempted to pass a handwritten note to the woman while she was still asleep, complimenting her appearance. This occurred when he was briefly escorted back to collect his belongings following his removal from the first-class cabin.
Upon the flight’s arrival in Miami, law enforcement officials took the accused into custody. During initial questioning, he denied any wrongdoing. However, after being confronted with video evidence recorded by fellow passengers, his statements reportedly changed. He first admitted to touching the woman’s back and upper body, but later acknowledged more extensive contact, stating that he had touched “whatever he could reach” from his seat.
The accused has since been charged with abusive sexual contact and produced before a federal court. Authorities have scheduled further proceedings, including a pre-trial detention hearing, as the investigation continues.
