Himanta Biswa Sarma Steps Down, Set for Return as New Government Formation Begins

News Mania Desks/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 6th May 2026

Himanta Biswa Sarma has resigned from his post as Chief Minister of Assam, initiating the formal process of government formation following the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The resignation was submitted to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who accepted it and requested Sarma to continue in a caretaker role until a new government is sworn in.

The move comes as part of standard constitutional procedure after an election result, even when the incumbent party secures a majority. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have retained power in the state with a strong mandate, paving the way for Sarma’s expected return as Chief Minister for another term.

Sources indicate that the oath-taking ceremony for the new government is likely to be held after May 11, with preparations already underway. Senior leaders from the BJP are expected to attend the swearing-in event, underscoring the political significance of the victory. The exact date will be finalized once internal party procedures are completed.

As part of these procedures, the BJP has appointed central observers, including party president J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, to oversee the selection of the legislature party leader. Newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will meet to formally choose their leader, a step that will determine the next Chief Minister.

Speaking after submitting his resignation, Sarma confirmed that he would continue to oversee administrative functions in the interim period. He also expressed appreciation for the support received during his tenure and emphasized the importance of a smooth transition as the new government takes shape. The NDA’s electoral success marks another significant milestone, as the alliance has secured consecutive terms in the state. Analysts attribute the victory to a combination of leadership, governance record, and effective campaign strategy.
