Vijay’s TVK Faces Hung Assembly Situation in Tamil Nadu Despite Emerging as Largest Party; Congress Extends Conditional Support

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has entered a period of uncertainty following the 2026 Assembly election results, with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest party but falling short of the majority mark required to form a government.
According to the election outcome, TVK secured around 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. However, the majority threshold stands at 118 seats, leaving the party approximately 10 seats short of an outright majority. This has resulted in a hung Assembly, with no single party or pre-poll alliance able to independently form the government.
In the immediate aftermath of the results, Vijay asserted his party’s intention to form the government, citing TVK’s strong performance and mandate as the largest party in the state. He subsequently staked claim to power, initiating discussions with other political parties to explore post-poll support arrangements.
A significant development in the post-election scenario has been the Congress party’s decision to extend conditional support to TVK. While Congress has indicated willingness to back Vijay’s leadership in principle, it has not committed to a formal alliance or merger. The nature of the support remains limited and situational, leaving key details of cooperation open to negotiation.
Despite this backing, TVK continues to fall short of the required majority. Even with Congress support factored in, the party is still unable to reach the 118-seat threshold needed to form a stable government on its own. This has intensified political discussions and strategic bargaining among regional and smaller parties, which are now seen as potential kingmakers in the evolving situation.
Sources suggest that TVK is actively engaging with independent candidates and smaller regional outfits in an effort to bridge the gap. These negotiations are expected to play a decisive role in determining whether Vijay can successfully form a government or whether alternative coalitions may emerge.
The current scenario highlights the fragmented mandate delivered by voters, reflecting a competitive political environment in Tamil Nadu. While TVK has gained significant ground as a newly prominent political force, the absence of a clear majority underscores the challenges of coalition-building in a multi-party system.
As discussions continue, the coming days are likely to be crucial in shaping the state’s political future. The outcome will depend on whether TVK can secure additional allies to cross the majority mark or if rival combinations manage to form an alternative governing alliance.
