Kolkata : A 27-year-old man was arrested from Kolkata’s Garden Reach area for allegedly sending a threatening email to the police, claiming a suicide bomb attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari with the help of the terror group Al Qaeda. The arrest comes after a joint operation by the Kolkata Police Cyber Cell and Special Task Force (STF).
According to Additional CP-IV V Solomon Nesakumar, the threatening email was received by the Officer-in-Charge of Bhowanipore Police Station around 10:15 am on May 14. The email was sent using the identity of a woman named Abida Ali, who is suspected to be collaborating with Al Qaeda to carry out the attack.

Further investigation traced the email’s origin to Hasnain Iqbal, a resident of Golam Abbas Lane in Garden Reach. During police questioning, Iqbal admitted to sending the email. Officials believe the intent behind sending the threat in the woman’s name was to harass or implicate her and her family falsely. Police said the accused later admitted to sending the email during questioning.
The accused is reported to have advanced IT knowledge, including skills to mask IP addresses and use technical tools to hide his digital footprint. Police also revealed that Iqbal had previously sent similar emails to multiple government bodies, including the Election Commission.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to probe the matter.
