Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving Prime Minister to hold office continuously through an uninterrupted tenure, prompting the Union Cabinet to adopt a resolution commending his leadership and contributions to the country’s development journey.

During a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, ministers passed a formal resolution congratulating Modi on achieving the milestone. The resolution described his tenure as a period marked by transformative governance, ambitious reforms and a renewed focus on inclusive growth. Cabinet members reportedly applauded the Prime Minister’s achievement, recognising what they termed as sustained public confidence in his leadership over the past 12 years.

According to the resolution, the government under Modi has implemented a range of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens and strengthening India’s position on the global stage. It highlighted efforts in expanding infrastructure, promoting digital services, improving access to welfare benefits and encouraging economic growth through policy reforms. The Cabinet also noted that these measures had contributed to enhancing transparency and efficiency in governance.

The resolution further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its long-term vision of building a “Viksit Bharat” or Developed India by 2047, when the country marks 100 years of Independence. It stated that the Prime Minister’s leadership had laid the foundation for achieving this objective through programmes focused on empowering the poor, strengthening social welfare systems and accelerating development across sectors.

Modi first assumed office as Prime Minister in May 2014 and has since led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government through three consecutive terms. By completing 4,399 days in office without interruption, he surpassed the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for the longest uninterrupted tenure by an elected Prime Minister.

The milestone has also generated political reactions. While leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party hailed the achievement as a reflection of the electorate’s faith in Modi’s governance model, opposition parties offered a more critical assessment. Some opposition leaders argued that celebrations over the record should not divert attention from pressing national concerns such as unemployment, inflation and other socio-economic challenges facing the country. As the Prime Minister enters another phase of his administration, the government has reiterated its intent to continue pursuing reforms and development initiatives aimed at shaping India’s future trajectory.
