News Mania Desk/29th March 2026

Celebrated filmmaker Goutam Ghose was sworn in as the Sheriff of Kolkata on March 25, 2026, marking the revival of the prestigious honorary post after a gap of five years. The position, rooted in the city’s colonial legacy, is non-political and largely ceremonial, traditionally held by eminent personalities.

Ghose’s appointment signals a renewed focus on preserving the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage. As part of his agenda, he has announced plans to collaborate on the restoration of archival records at the Calcutta High Court, alongside initiatives to document Kolkata’s colonial-era history.

He is also expected to work closely with the Pronam project, aimed at supporting and engaging the elderly community.

Apart from his cinematic achievements, Ghose currently serves as the Working President of The Bengal, a socio-cultural organisation. His appointment is seen as a blend of cultural leadership and civic responsibility, reinforcing Kolkata’s longstanding tradition of honouring distinguished individuals through this historic office.
