Riyan Parag, captain of the Rajasthan Royals, has been fined for breaching the code of conduct during an IPL 2026 match after he was seen vaping inside the dressing room.
The incident took place during a game against Punjab Kings, when television cameras captured Parag using an e-cigarette. The footage quickly circulated on social media, sparking criticism and prompting action from cricket authorities.
Following a review, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed a fine of 25% of his match fee and awarded one demerit point. The offence was classified as a Level 1 breach under the IPL Code of Conduct, with officials stating that the act was inappropriate and brought the game into disrepute.
Parag accepted the sanction handed down by the match referee, bringing the disciplinary proceedings to a swift conclusion. However, the incident has reignited debate around player behaviour and professionalism in high-profile tournaments.
The controversy also draws attention to broader legal and ethical concerns, as vaping products are banned in India under existing regulations. While the IPL’s code does not specifically address vaping, authorities deemed the act unacceptable within the professional sporting environment.
The episode has attracted criticism from cricket experts and former players, many of whom stressed that athletes participating in a globally followed league must uphold high standards of conduct. As public figures, players are expected to set an example for fans, particularly younger audiences.
Although no suspension has been issued, the fine serves as a warning and reinforces the league’s stance on discipline. With the tournament ongoing, officials are expected to remain vigilant about maintaining decorum both on and off the field.
