A gas leak from an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) crude oil well in Assam’s Sivasagar district has continued unabated for 14 days, sparking growing concern among local residents. The leak, reported from the Baghjan area, began earlier this month and has not yet been brought under full control.
Despite the prolonged leak, ONGC has stated that it has achieved a “critical milestone” in efforts to control the blowout. However, visible emissions and the distinct smell of gas have left the local population anxious about potential health and environmental impacts.
Residents have demanded swift action and greater transparency, citing fears of contamination and long-term ecological damage. Meanwhile, environmentalists and local officials have urged ONGC to expedite mitigation measures and ensure safety for surrounding villages.
The incident recalls past blowouts in the region, including the infamous Baghjan gas well tragedy in 2020, which caused extensive ecological and human damage. While ONGC says it is working with specialized teams to contain the situation, no clear timeline has been given for when the leak will be fully sealed.
Authorities are monitoring the area, but calls for an independent investigation and long-term safety guarantees are mounting.
