WMO Warns of Likely El Niño Return, Raising Fears of Extreme Weather Worldwide

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th June 2026

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has cautioned that there is an 80% chance of an El Niño event developing between June and August, a climate phenomenon that could significantly influence weather patterns across the globe and affect rainfall, temperatures and agricultural output in several regions, including India.

According to the UN weather agency, current oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the tropical Pacific indicate a strong likelihood of El Niño formation in the coming months. Forecast models suggest that once established, the event could continue through the latter part of the year, increasing the risk of weather-related disruptions worldwide.

El Niño occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. The phenomenon is known to alter global weather systems, often resulting in droughts in some regions and excessive rainfall or flooding in others. Scientists have also warned that El Niño can contribute to higher global temperatures and intensify the impact of climate change.

The warning has drawn particular attention in India, where El Niño has historically been associated with weaker monsoon rainfall. A below-normal monsoon could affect agricultural production, water availability and rural livelihoods, especially in regions heavily dependent on seasonal rains. Concerns have also been raised about the potential impact on food prices and overall economic activity.
