BJP Claims TMC May Face Maharashtra-Style Split; Trinamool Dismisses Allegations

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 3rd June 2026

Political tensions have escalated in West Bengal after BJP leaders claimed that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) could be heading towards a split similar to the political upheavals that reshaped Maharashtra in recent years. The allegations have triggered sharp reactions from the TMC, which has rejected the claims and insisted that the party remains united.
The speculation was sparked by BJP MLA and former Trinamool leader Tapas Roy, who suggested that growing dissatisfaction within the TMC could eventually lead to a rebellion among party legislators. Roy argued that internal disagreements and resentment among some leaders were creating conditions similar to those that preceded major splits in Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party.
The comments come amid reports of unease within sections of the Trinamool Congress over organisational decisions and leadership issues. Discussions surrounding the functioning of the party, as well as criticism voiced by some former members and dissident leaders, have fuelled rumours of factionalism within the ruling party.
However, senior TMC leaders have strongly denied any possibility of a split. They described the BJP’s allegations as politically motivated and aimed at creating confusion among party workers ahead of future electoral battles. Party leaders maintained that the organisation continues to enjoy the support of its legislators and grassroots workers under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In an apparent effort to strengthen the party structure and address concerns within the organisation, the TMC has recently undertaken a restructuring exercise involving several committees and frontal organisations. Party insiders say the move is intended to improve coordination and reinforce unity across different levels of the organisation.
Political observers note that while disagreements and internal debates are common in large political parties, there is currently no clear evidence of an organised rebellion within the TMC. Nevertheless, the BJP’s remarks have intensified political debate in the state and added a new dimension to the rivalry between West Bengal’s two principal political forces.
