The 2026 Assam Assembly election results have reaffirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the dominant political force in the state, with the ruling coalition securing a comfortable majority and continuing its hold on power. The results, declared on May 4, reflected a decisive mandate in favour of the BJP, marking another significant electoral success in the northeastern region.
In a House of 126 members, the BJP crossed the required majority mark of 64 seats on its own, while its allies in the NDA further strengthened the ruling bloc’s overall numbers. The alliance’s performance ensured a smooth path to government formation without the need for post-poll negotiations or reliance on independent support. Early trends during counting had already indicated a strong showing for the ruling party, which maintained consistent leads across key constituencies throughout the day.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who led the BJP campaign in the state, played a central role in the party’s victory. Under his leadership, the BJP is believed to have secured around 82 seats independently, reinforcing its position as the single largest party in the Assembly. The campaign focused heavily on development initiatives, welfare schemes, and governance achievements, which appeared to resonate with voters across urban and rural regions.
The opposition Indian National Congress, led by Gaurav Gogoi, once again failed to mount a significant challenge. Despite efforts to revive its organisational strength and reconnect with the electorate, the party remained well behind the BJP in terms of seat share. Analysts pointed out that the Congress was unable to convert its campaign momentum into electoral gains, as the ruling alliance maintained its strong organisational presence and voter base across the state.
The election witnessed robust voter participation, with turnout figures reflecting strong engagement from the electorate. This high level of participation added legitimacy to the mandate, which clearly favoured continuity in governance under the BJP-led alliance. Political observers noted that the outcome demonstrated voter confidence in the current administration’s performance and policy direction.
Throughout the counting process, the BJP maintained a clear edge in several key constituencies, gradually widening its lead as results progressed. By mid-day, it had become evident that the NDA was headed toward a decisive majority, eliminating any uncertainty about government formation. The final tally confirmed the continuation of BJP rule in Assam for another term.
The results also highlight the growing consolidation of the NDA in northeastern politics, with Assam remaining one of its strongest bastions in the region. The BJP’s sustained electoral success in the state is being attributed to a combination of governance initiatives, welfare outreach, and strong leadership at both state and central levels.
With this victory, the BJP has secured a third consecutive term in Assam, reinforcing its political dominance and setting the stage for continued policy implementation. Meanwhile, the Congress faces the challenge of rebuilding its organisational structure and strategy in the state after another disappointing electoral performance.
