Several persons were injured on Tuesday when an 89-year-old man opened fire at a social security office and courthouse in central Athens, Greece. The shotgun has been located, but the search for him is still ongoing.

An employee at the social security office was injured by the suspect carrying a shotgun. The gunman had left by the time cops showed up.

After yelling at a worker “to duck,” the suspect proceeded to the fourth floor of the social security fund’s offices in the Kerameikos neighborhood of central Athens and opened fire. Another worker was hit by his bullet and suffered a leg injury.

According to Alexandros Varveris, the head of the National Social Security Fund, the shooter concealed the shotgun beneath a trench coat. According to the police, the same shooter later reopened fire on the ground floor of a court building in a different area of the city, injuring multiple individuals.

The attack’s motivation is yet unknown. However, public television ERT stated that the gunman’s actions were motivated by the fact that he had tossed envelopes containing documents on the courthouse floor before to firing.

“He went in, went up to the fourth floor, raised his shotgun, told an employee to duck and hit another one,” Varveris told ERT radio. He said the gunman didn’t appear to specifically target the employee he hit.

After police placed a tourniquet to the injured worker’s leg on the spot, he was taken to a hospital. In Greece, where gun ownership is permitted but strictly restricted, gun violence is comparatively uncommon.
