NIFFA Expands to Northern Territory, Strengthening India–Australia Cultural Ties

In a significant boost to India–Australia cultural relations, the Northern Territory Government has welcomed the first annual Indian film festival in Darwin and Alice Springs, marking a new chapter for the National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA). Backed by Tourism and Events NT and Screen Territory, the initiative provides NIFFA with a strong and lasting presence in one of Australia’s most distinctive regions.
The festival was officially inaugurated in Darwin on April 30 by NT Minister for Arts, Hon Jinson Charls, with its Alice Springs chapter set to open on June 11. This multi-year support underscores a strategic partnership that connects cinema with tourism, diaspora engagement, and co-production opportunities, reflecting the growing synergy between India and Australia in the screen sector.
Welcoming the festival, Hon Marie-Clare Boothby MLA, Minister for Tourism and Hospitality and Minister for Major Events, highlighted the uniqueness of NIFFA as the only festival of its kind in Australia. She emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting storytelling, community engagement, and local talent through such initiatives.
NIFFA Founder and Festival Director Anupam Sharma described the multi-year backing as a strong endorsement of the festival’s vision to deepen cultural engagement between the two nations. Having previously filmed in the Northern Territory, Sharma expressed pride in bringing Indian cinema to both the “Top End” and the “Red Centre.”
The festival will open with a red carpet gala at Darwin’s iconic Deckchair Cinema, followed by screenings at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT). The program will then travel to the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs, ensuring wider regional participation.
Support from the Indian Consulate General in Perth and local Indian community associations has further strengthened the festival’s foundation, making it a platform for cultural celebration, storytelling, and community visibility. An NT Cinema Committee will also be established to guide NIFFA’s future activities in the region.
Beyond film screenings, NIFFA aims to foster deeper engagement through celebrity visits, workshops, influencer outreach, and community forums. These initiatives are designed to enhance people-to-people connections while exploring opportunities in tourism and the creative industries.
As India–Australia relations continue to grow across multiple sectors, NIFFA’s expansion into the Northern Territory signals a shift toward more inclusive cultural exchange, bringing Indian stories to new audiences and embedding them in some of Australia’s most iconic cultural landscapes.
