Russian Strikes on Kyiv Overshadow G7 Summit as Zelenskyy Seeks Greater Support

Fresh Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv cast a shadow over the G7 summit, intensifying international concern over the continuing conflict in Ukraine and placing renewed focus on calls for stronger support for the war-torn nation.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the latest wave of strikes killed several civilians and injured dozens more. Among the sites damaged was the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage landmark that holds deep cultural and religious significance for Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting the country’s heritage and civilian infrastructure.
Moscow, however, rejected the allegations and maintained that the damage resulted from the operation of Ukraine’s air defence systems. The conflicting claims added to the already tense atmosphere surrounding international efforts to bring an end to the prolonged conflict.
The developments unfolded as world leaders gathered for the G7 summit, where the war in Ukraine emerged as one of the central topics of discussion. Zelenskyy is expected to use the high-level meeting to press allied nations for additional military assistance, particularly advanced air defence systems capable of intercepting increasingly sophisticated Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian leader also reiterated his willingness to engage in direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in pursuit of a diplomatic resolution. However, Kyiv indicated that there had been little positive response from Moscow regarding the possibility of face-to-face negotiations.
European leaders attending the summit reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine politically, economically and militarily. Discussions reportedly included proposals for expanding sanctions against Russia, targeting sectors linked to its defence capabilities and energy revenues. As diplomatic initiatives struggle to gain momentum, the humanitarian toll continues to mount, underscoring the urgency of international efforts to prevent further loss of life and secure a lasting resolution to the crisis.
