Chinese Envoy: India And China Should Refrain From Meddling In One Another’s Internal Affairs
Sun Weidong, the departing Chinese ambassador to India, stated on October 25 that the two nations must respect the rule of not meddling in one another’s internal affairs.
The Chinese envoy added that rather than defining their bilateral ties by differences, the two sides should work to manage and resolve conflicts and seek a suitable solution through communication and consultation.
The Galwan standoff in eastern Ladakh and the Doklam plateau conflict in the India-Bhutan-China trijunction is two recent border issues between the two countries.
The Chinese envoy also stated in his parting speech that big neighbors will unavoidably see each other as rivals and threats if the Western paradigm of geopolitics is applied to the relationship between India and China.
If we see it as a form of bad karma, Sun said, it will lead to suspicion and undermining, competition and conflict, and even rivalry. We should create a fresh route that diverges from the past and escape the geopolitics trap.
In his comments, Sun seemed to be referring to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad, a partnership between the United States, Australia, India, and Japan aimed at enhancing maritime security. The group wants to give its allies a chance to compete with China’s expanding commercial influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
As neighbors and developing economies, the two nations should possess sufficient knowledge to find a way to coexist in harmony and engage in win-win collaboration, according to the Chinese envoy.
