Russia Launches Major Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv Amid Escalating War

Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone strike on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, triggering widespread destruction and panic across the city. Ukrainian officials described the overnight assault as one of the most intense attacks in recent months, with explosions reported in multiple districts and emergency services deployed across affected areas.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack involved a combination of missiles and drones launched at Kyiv and surrounding regions. Air raid sirens sounded throughout the night, forcing residents to seek shelter in underground metro stations, basements, and designated bunkers as blasts echoed across the capital. Witnesses reported seeing thick smoke rising from several locations after the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that intelligence agencies had warned of a possible large-scale Russian offensive involving advanced missile systems. Reports indicated that Russia used its hypersonic Oreshnik missile during the assault, a weapon believed to be among Moscow’s most sophisticated and difficult-to-intercept ballistic systems. The use of such weaponry has heightened concerns over further escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Officials in Kyiv confirmed that the attack caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, schools, marketplaces, and utility facilities. Several fires broke out in different parts of the city following the strikes, while rescue teams worked through the night to evacuate residents and search damaged structures. Authorities reported multiple casualties, with several people killed and dozens injured during the assault.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that the operation targeted military facilities, air defence systems, and strategic infrastructure connected to Ukraine’s defence operations. Ukrainian officials, however, rejected those claims and accused Moscow of deliberately attacking civilian areas to spread fear among the population and weaken morale.
The latest strike has drawn international condemnation from several Western countries and global organisations. European leaders expressed concern over the reported use of hypersonic missiles against urban centres, while NATO members reportedly increased surveillance and monitoring activities in nearby regions following the escalation.
The renewed assault comes at a time when diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled. Military tensions between the two countries have continued to intensify, with both sides accusing each other of carrying out attacks on civilian and strategic targets. As rescue and recovery operations continue in Kyiv, the attack has once again highlighted the growing humanitarian and security challenges caused by the prolonged conflict, which has now entered another phase of heightened military escalation.
